Optometry Training and Education
Aspiring optometrists must complete a four-year degree program prior to Optometry school. The post-baccalaureate Doctor of Optometry degree program is another 4 year program. This program of study is designed to provide individuals with the skills needed to gain initial licensure as optometrists. National and State Board Examinations are required as well as annual continuing education to maintain that license to practice. It is not uncommon for optometrists to complete additional post graduate fellowship for specialized training.
Optometry training covers the entire spectrum of eye care. Optometrist examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye. Often, optometrists and ophthalmologists will work together to provide complete eye care for a patient.
